The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced plans to impose significant fines on companies and organizations that violate the data privacy rights of Nigerians, starting January 2025.
This initiative aligns with the Commission’s commitment to enforcing the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), as highlighted by the National Commissioner, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, during a recent briefing on the agency’s strategic plans for the coming year.
Stepping Up Enforcement
Dr. Olatunji confirmed that while the NDPC has not previously issued penalties for data privacy breaches, this will change drastically in 2025.
“For data controllers and processors, there is going to be massive enforcement in 2025. We have never issued any fines, but going forward, you will hear us issuing heavy penalties,” he stated.
The new enforcement measures are intended to emphasize accountability and encourage organizations to comply with the NDPA, safeguarding the personal data of Nigerian citizens.
Job Creation and Skill Development
As part of the NDPC’s 2023-2027 Roadmap, the Commission plans to launch the second phase of its strategic initiatives, which focus on creating job opportunities in the data protection sector.
In 2024, the NDPC trained and certified a new wave of data protection experts. Dr. Olatunji assured Nigerians that these professionals would make a visible impact in 2025, bridging the skills gap in the market and helping organizations meet regulatory standards.
“There are a lot of data controllers and processors looking for people to work with them. Those we trained in 2024 will be launched into the job market where they can collaborate with these organizations,” he explained.
