Data Protection Gets Serious: NDPC to Issue Heavy Fines from 2025
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced its intent to strictly enforce the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) starting January 2025, with heavy fines awaiting organizations that fail to comply. According to Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner, this marks a significant shift in the Commission’s approach, emphasizing accountability for data controllers and processors. "We have never issued any fines, but going forward, you will hear us issuing heavy penalties," Olatunji stated. This enforcement aims to enhance data privacy awareness and create job opportunities through the development of certified data protection experts, solidifying Nigeria's position in the global data privacy sector.
