About this dataset

This workbook brings together four health-access indicators for African countries so you can decide where to invest, expand a clinic or pharmacy footprint, or target health products. It covers life expectancy at birth for 57 countries and territories (total, female and male) from UN 2024 estimates, and current health spending as a share of GDP for 53 countries (2021), with a 53-country average of 5.56% to benchmark any single market against.

The medicine availability figures show where private demand is strong and public supply falls short: pooled results put public-sector availability of essential medicines at 48.1% versus 70.3% in the private sector across 34 lower- and middle-income African countries, drawn from a review of 52 studies. Prices and affordability are reported alongside, helping you spot markets where patients rely on private channels.

A fourth tab adds regional substance-use prevalence estimates (for example, past-year cannabis use around 10% in Southern, West and Central Africa). Sources and confidence levels are labelled for each dataset, from HIGH for the UN and World Bank figures to LOW–MEDIUM for the modelled substance-use estimates, so you know how far to lean on each number.
