This dataset compiles the National Association of State Budget Officers' annual State Expenditure Reports into one time series. It tracks total spending across all 50 states (plus DC and territories in recent editions), broken down by funding source: general funds, other state funds, bonds, and federal funds. Total state spending crossed $2.0 trillion for the first time in FY2018 and reached roughly $2.65 trillion by 2021.
Use it to size the public-sector market you sell into, time expansion or bidding decisions around funding cycles, and see how the mix of state money has shifted over more than a decade. The COVID-19 aid tab shows how federal emergency funding flowed into state budgets, useful for anyone whose customers depend on state contracts or grants.
Figures are in nominal US dollars by state fiscal year. Each report edition marks its most recent year as an estimate and revises prior years as actuals, and both the original and revised figures are preserved so you can see how numbers changed between editions.
