This dataset brings together findings on how Nigerians pay for healthcare and how far the country has come toward universal coverage. It covers a six-state study of State-Supported Health Insurance Schemes across all geopolitical zones, drawn from 3,732 respondents, alongside national figures on households facing catastrophic health spending.
Use it to size the gap in the private and community insurance market, understand who is paying for care out of their own pocket, and pinpoint which regions and household groups are most exposed to ruinous medical bills. Nearly half of households (45.5% by budget-share measure, 43.1% by capacity-to-pay measure) face catastrophic health expenditure, signalling clear demand for affordable coverage products.
The dataset also identifies the drivers behind catastrophic spending and how it varies across income groups, giving product, pricing, and expansion teams a grounded view of where to build and who to serve.
